Speaking at at the ISLC Conference this Saturday




I have been asked by the Office of International Programs here at JMU to speak at the International Student Leadership Conference this coming Saturday. There are a couple of reasons why they asked me, I think. Firstly, the audience is mostly comprised of international students and, perhaps, as an "international" faculty member, I can offer some insights into leading. Secondly, I am a writing teacher and when I proposed "writing for leadership" as the topic of my session, it was received rather well.

So, as I prepare for the session, I think I will structure it around the rhetoric of the current presidential campaign and will begin with the instant-classic Obama speech on race last week. So, I will probably end up talking about the role of rhetoric and persuasion in mobilizing the masses for a cause.

Creating a General Education Course with an Emphasis on the Rhetoric of Science

A colleague and I have been charged by our department and college dean to create a version of our rigorous freshman composition course which would focus on the rhetoric of science (not writing for the sciences, mind you) and that might attract the kinds of students who are either already majoring in science or are thinking about majoring in science. Or, just the students who might go for something new, rather than writing humanities-based papers to which they are so used in high school.

It's that time of year again: time to make and post course fliers trying to attract students into the summer classes. Here is what I am teaching this summer. It is not a gem of design, but any means, but it, hopefully, does the job.




WAC Workshop in Ukraine

This past January, I delivered a WAC workshop to faculty of the National Technical University: Kharkiv Polytechnical Institute in Kharkiv Ukraine. Below are some belated photos. The most interesting part of this experience for me was realizing how similar writing teachers' concerns are in different countries: workloads, assignment design, integrating the teaching of writing into the teaching of the course "content," and so on.
